June 28th, 2009 - SCM Featured on WBUR "Should Seniors Drive?"
In the wake of several serious accients by elderly drivers, lawmakers on Beacon Hill are considering changes to rules regarding seniors and driving, including one that would issue new driving tests to anyone over 85. Another bill makes it easier for doctors to recommend elderly drivers have their licenses revoked. This week, we’re looking at elderly mobility, and asking, once seniors are unable to continue driving, how can they get around?

A recent spate of auto accidents involving elderly drivers, culminating in the tragic death of a four-year-old last week, has spurred significant conversation around the issue of age and licensure. Safety must be central to the public policy discussion. But in holding the discussion, we cannot ignore broader issues surrounding the place for elders in society and the impact of our policies on the health of elders and the vibrancy of elder life in the Commonwealth.

Dec 31, 2008 - SCM reinvents Door2Door service for seniors, disabled.
Somerville resident Marion Craven is 80 and legally blind. She does not drive and would never get to her doctor’s appointments at Lawrence-Memorial in Medford twice a week without what she says is the best service in the area.

A "road"-eo is designed to test the on-street skills of professional drivers - including everything from backing into difficult spaces to tying down wheelchairs. And safety is the name of the game.

June 9, 2008 - SCM Community Transportation launched its 25th anniversary activities today with a "Friendraiser" at the new Tufts Boathouse in Medford.
Medford - SCM, which was founded created 25 years ago by the cities of Somerville, Cambridge and Medford (SCM), currently provides more than 8,500 one-way trips a month to senior citizens and persons with disabilities in these and surrounding communities. SCM ferries its riders to medical appointments, grocery shopping, adult daycare facilities, councils on aging and excursions.

December 18, 2007 - SCM Offers New Service to Seniors
Cambridge - SCM Community Transportation today announces a new transportation service that will honor the memory of former executive director, Paul A. Plato. The service, called "Paul's Ride" will assist area seniors who wish to visit their loved ones in the hospital or nursing home.

August 19, 2007 - SCM Struts Skills at 1st Annual Safety Roadeo
The drivers of SCM Community Transportation got up early this past Sunday for a very important occasion: SCM's first annual Safety "Roadeo," and no, that's not a typo. A "road"-eo is designed to test the on-street skills of professional drivers- including everything from backing into difficult spaces to tying down wheelchairs. And safety is the name of the game. This year's Roadeo was held in Medford in front of the old Ames Department Store, courtesy of Berenson and Associates and Fellsway Plaza Ltd.

July 9 2007 - Boston Foundation Grant
SCM Community Transportation has been awarded a grant of $35,000 by the Boston Foundation. According to Reed Cochran, Executive Director, the grant will be used to fund a part-time financial strategist to begin positioning the agency for a new business model.

June 25, 2007 - 2007 Disabilities Awareness Award
The City of Medford's Commission for Persons with Disabilities recognized the staff of SCM Community Transportation by awarding them the 2007 Disabilities Awareness Award. Mayor Michael J. McGlynn presented the award to Executive Director Reed Cochran "in recognition of SCM's commitment and dedication to equality and independence for people with disabilities." The ceremony, held in the mayor's office, was attended by dozens of SCM staff and Medford patrons of the service.

To the cities and state, it is yet another line expenditure they can afford to cut, but to the seniors who wouldn't get to their doctors, the grocery store or to the senior center any other way, it is a new lease on life. For more than two decades, SCM Community Transportation has been providing friendly and valuable service to seniors and disabled citizen for free. You've seen the blue-striped white vans around Somerville, Cambridge and Medford but did you know about the vital link they provide between home and community for a large part of the population?
